Feeling inspired yet?
Imagine the scene. A small, elderly tank locomotive simmering gently outside it's shed, emitting that instantly recognisable aroma of steam and hot oil. just then you hear a sound approaching from the distance, soon a few wisps of steam are glanced through the lush greenery as it approaches, a little loco approaches, rocking and swaying gently over the slightly uneven narrow gauge track, it's exhaust beat sharpens as it encounters the uphill gradient, chuffing sharply as it trundles past your position and hauls it's rake of assorted goods wagons clicking and rattling past your position, you sit for a while as the train heads off again into the distance, listening to the rhythmic clickety clack of the wheels passing over the rail joints mingling with the busy hum of bees and the twitter of the birds. you lean back in your deckchair, sip on your cold beer and consider whether to mow the lawn, do some weeding or wait for the train to come round again, here it's usually the latter!
This is a real railway, in miniature, built on a budget by a modeller with "average" skill level, it really is easy, and strangely rewarding.

Like many other 16mm modellers, I moved into the scale after many years of smaller scale indoor "electric mice" layouts. I had always wanted to build a "real" railway outdoors, one that has real weather conditions, real lighting and real greenery, the Maesffordd and Nant-Gorris is the finished result. This is no Train set! Nor is it a test track pinned to scaffold planks stuck up in the air, this is my own interpretation of a Welsh narrow gauge railway with landscape, buildings that stay outdoors all year round, with mother nature being given free reign over the weathering, lighting and landscape. Even the trains that have their own character and don't just look like something that's been shaken out of a box. Like many other fellow 16mm modellers I am trying to achieve that certain element of "convincing realism", a tall order but hopefully it's getting somewhere close! Construction started in 2001 and even now I'm still adding bits and changing things, this railway is continually evolving and like many other railways, there'll always be something new to add! Keep watching the Latest News page for updates.
Hopefully some of my photo's and videos may isnpire you to start your own railway, Let me know if they do.

Oh.. and of course, like the full size ones, we run in all weathers! Well...It's part of the fun!
